Overview

The Vault Documentation Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server allows LLM clients to directly access official Vault documentation. This server serves as a reference for LLMs and cannot perform actions in Vault. It provides two tools: search_documentation and search_release_notes.

The Vault Documentation MCP Server supports documentation from the following Vault application families:

  • Clinical
  • Commercial
  • Medical
  • Platform
  • Quality
  • QualityOne
  • Regulatory
  • Safety
  • Vault CRM

See the guides for detailed instructions on how to connect the Vault Documentation MCP Server to your preferred LLM client.

The Vault Documentation MCP Server offers two available tools for searching through Vault documentation and release notes.

Use search_documentation to search documentation across the Vault Developer and Vault Help documentation.

The tool accepts three parameters:

ParameterDefaultDescription
source—Targets a specific documentation set.
app_familyplatformTargets a specific Vault application family. For the Developer Documentation, API Reference, and Vault Help Documentation sources, specify which application family you're working with if it isn't clear from your query context. VAPIL Javadocs and Vault Java SDK Javadocs support only the Platform application family.
releasegeneralTargets general or limited release documentation. All sources support both releases except VAPIL Javadocs, which is general release only, and Vault CRM, which is limited release only. Learn more about Vault Releases in Vault Help.

See Handling Parameters for guidance on how your LLM client determines these parameter values from your query.

Use the source parameter to target one of the following documentation sets:

Use source="vault_developer_documentation" to search the Vault Developer Portal for information about developer features such as Vault Java SDK, Vault API, Metadata Definition Language (MDL), Vault Query Language (VQL), and Direct Data API.

For Vault API endpoint references, use source="vault_api_reference". For Vault Java SDK Javadocs, use source="vault_java_sdk_javadocs".

When app_family="vault_crm", search_documentation only includes content from the Vault CRM Developer Portal. This does not include Veeva CRM.

Use source="vault_api_reference" to search for specific, technical information in the Vault API Reference. This source can retrieve:

  • Endpoint request details (including URI paths, headers, and parameters)
  • Endpoint response details (including returned attributes and response structure)
  • Response status details and error type information

When app_family="vault_crm", search_documentation only includes the following from the Vault CRM Developer Portal: Order Management API, Multichannel CRM Javascript library, and X-Pages Javascript Library. This does not include Veeva CRM.

Use source="vault_java_sdk_javadocs" to search the Vault Java SDK Javadocs. This source can retrieve:

  • Package overviews
  • Field and constructor information
  • Method details (including parameters, return types, and exceptions thrown)
  • Class and interface descriptions
  • Code examples

Use source="vapil_javadocs" to search the VAPIL Javadocs. This source can retrieve:

  • An overview of VAPIL
  • Package overviews
  • Field and constructor information
  • Method details (including parameters, return types, and exceptions thrown)
  • Class and interface descriptions
  • Code examples

Use source="vault_help_documentation" to search for information in the Vault Help Docs. This source can retrieve:

  • Information on how to configure Vault
  • Information on how to use Vault
  • An overview of Vault features and configuration options

When app_family="vault_crm", search_documentation only searches Vault CRM Help.

Use search_release_notes to search Veeva Vault release notes for features, changes, and enhancements introduced in a specific release or range of releases.

The tool accepts three parameters:

ParameterRequiredDescription
sourceYesTargets a specific release notes set. See Sources.
start_releaseNoThe release version to search from. Omit to search all releases for the given source, which is useful for overview or reference pages not tied to a specific release.
end_releaseNoAn optional upper bound on the release range. Use only when start_release is also provided.

See Handling Parameters for guidance on how your LLM client determines these parameter values from your query.

Use the source parameter to target one of the following release notes sets:

Use source="vault_developer_release_notes" to search release notes from the Vault Developer Portal. This source covers developer-facing changes including:

  • Vault Java SDK
  • Vault API
  • Vault Query Language (VQL)
  • Metadata Definition Language (MDL)
  • Direct Data API
  • Other platform developer features

Use source="vault_help_release_notes" to search release notes from the Vault Help release notes portal. This source covers product changes for end users and administrators across all Vault application families.

Use source="vault_crm_release_notes" to search release notes from the Vault CRM Help portal. This source covers product changes specific to Vault CRM.

Use source="vault_crm_developer_release_notes" to search release notes from the Vault CRM Developer Portal. This source covers developer feature changes specific to Vault CRM.

Specify releases using the general release version only. The format is <year>R<number>, such as 25R1 or 26R2. Searching by limited release version is not supported. When a release cycle includes limited releases, all limited release versions roll up into the following general release version. For example, to search for content introduced in 26R1.2, provide 26R2 as the release.
