# Documents



Vault is a highly configurable system designed to reflect the business model of documents. Each Vault can have different document types, document fields, etc. The Document Metadata APIs allow you to query the Vault to understand what document-based metadata is available to use. <Aside>Because Vault completely indexes the document content and metadata, there is a delay before a new document becomes fully available.</Aside>
